Scream 4

The illicit trade in art and cultural artifacts is a major category of international crime. This includes theft of individual works of art, illegal export of objects protected by international laws, and pillaging of archaeological sites. Art theft is an international problem requiring cooperation at all levels of law enforcement. To aid in this endeavor, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) established the National Stolen Art File (NSAF) to assist law enforcement agencies in resolving this ever increasing problem.

Jingle Jargon or Legal Lexicon

Looking for the definition of a term in a particular subject can be difficult and time consuming. That's where the Glossarist can help you look. Just choose a subject or search for the industry you are interested in at the top. Languages are evolving and changing all the time and if we don't keep up then fairly soon we simply won't understand what others are saying. The Glosserist put together a compendium of glossaries on various subjects so you can find the best definitions of terms in which you are interested.

Thank you to Ray for pointing me to this resource.

Warm Fire and a Good Book

"Between 1935 and 1960, the paperback revolution created a new industry overnight, permanently changed our understanding of 'the book, helped to democratize reading by increasing readership and eroding the lines between 'high' and 'low' literature, and created its own, unique genres and forms of expression." There are links here to cover art, articles, and an animated timeline.

Corrupts Absolutely

Transparency International, the only international non-governmental organisation devoted to combating corruption, brings civil society, business, and governments together in a powerful global coalition. TI, through its International Secretariat and more than 85 independent national chapters around the world, works at both the national and international level to curb both the supply and demand of corruption. In the international arena, TI raises awareness about the damaging effects of corruption, advocates policy reform, works towards the implementation of multilateral conventions and subsequently monitors compliance by governments, corporations and banks. At the national level, chapters work to increase levels of accountability and transparency, monitoring the performance of key institutions and pressing for necessary reforms in a non-party political manner.

From Scratch

As a kid, did you ever wonder how things were made? I know I did. I love Chocolate. At the Alliance for Innovative Manufacturing at the Stanford University Web site, you can watch things being built. All kinds of things--like cars, candies and clothes. The choice is yours. I clicked on the virtual tour and watched a Chocolate Bar being made from scratch. It took nearly five and a half minutes--on film, anyways. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to enjoy How Everyday Things Are Made. Anyone will like watching raw stuff become finished stuff through manufacturing.

I Have a Dream

What are the toughest tasks in sports? USA TODAY's Sports staff took up the challenge to produce a top-10 list. I am generally a sports misanthrope, but this is the type of article I can appreciate. I have always dreamed about what it might be like to be a sports superstar, instead I must be content with being pedantic pundit. Click here to read the Cover story that kicked off the series.
Thank you to Ray for bring the article to my attention.

Grassroots

Over one million people all over the world have joined local Meetup Groups. In the last two years, Meetup Groups have brought communities together, shaken up politics, given people a voice…and had a lot of fun. A Meetup Group shares a cause or interest and meets regularly face-to-face. There are literally thousands of local Meetup Groups for thousands of interests. I want to point out one Meetup Group in particular, Stop the Draft Meetup Groups worldwide. Meet other local people who want to Stop the Draft in the US. Organize with others to discourage the reinstatement of the draft and help set up an infrastructure to help people avoid a reinstated draft.

This in response to Lisa's comment to a post on Electronic Ephemera.

Representative Government

WhiteHouseForSale.org is a project of Public Citizen, a national, nonprofit public interest organization with 160,000 members that was founded in 1971 to represent consumer interests in Congress, the executive branch and the courts.

They fight for openness and democratic accountability in government, for the right of consumers to seek redress in the courts; for clean, safe and sustainable energy sources; for social and economic justice in trade policies; for strong health, safety and environmental protections; and for safe, effective and affordable prescription drugs and health care.

The web site is managed by Congress Watch. Congress Watch champions consumer interests before the U.S. Congress and serves as a government watchdog. It lobbies to strengthen health, safety and environmental protections; demand an end to corporate subsidies; fight to preserve citizen access to the courts to redress corporate wrongdoing; and seek to ensure a strong democracy by exposing the harmful impact of money in politics and advocating for comprehensive campaign finance reform.

Most people watch several hours of television each day. Some long- running shows become a part of our lives. How many times have you altered plans because you had to catch The Sopranos or needed to find out if the castaways ever get off Gilligan's Island? (which they did in a reunion show)

TV Tome lists just about every show ever created. Along with introductory information, you'll find an episode guide and cast list. The fun part is the goofs guide--a collection of mistakes and contradictory statements made by characters.

And Justice for All

The individuals charged with dispensing justice in our society have a direct impact on all of our rights, as well as on protecting the environment, workers, and consumers. The nation's federal judges - who are appointed for life - must be moderate, fair and impartial. What could be more important than saving our courts from extremist ideologues? The Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, the nation's oldest, largest, and most diverse civil rights coalition, has launched the Save Our Courts campaign to oppose the Bush administration's extremist nominees to the federal courts.

Our Future

Over 100 Prominent Americans — citizen activists and policy experts concerned about the country and the planet — joined together to launch and build the Campaign for America's Future. They are challenging the big money corporate agenda by encouraging Americans to speak up — to discuss and debate a new vision of an economy and a future that works for all of us.
America's Future insists that the question of falling wages and rising insecurity be placed at the center of our national debate. They challenge those who suggest that nothing can be done and expose the conservative agenda that has made things worse. America's Future works to revitalize a progressive agenda, and fights to make this economy work for working people once again.
